Kaffee Klatsch - chatting about moving bloghomes
african vanielje on Nov 20 2007 at 1:31 pm | Filed under: Kaffee Klatsch

Whew! I’ve done it. And believe me I’m not doing it again.I’ve made the coffee and I’m sitting down to a hot cup and some of Jeni’s mom’s Biscotti. I forgot how much I love biscotti. The Italian version of South African rusks, I guess. I hope you’ll all join me, or feel free to bring your own snack to the Kaffee Klatsch. Just link and / or send me a small pic so we can all share. I’m not picky about food gifts, but something with a high sugar / chocolate content would be good right now.
Thank you for all of your patience with my unreliable site. I’m hoping that I’ll be very happy here and I’m just getting the hang of how things work. I’m now hosting my own site and have switched to wordpress so it is a little confusing trying to figure out what goes where. But I’m getting there.
The great thing about wordpress is that I’ve managed to switch over all my archives and all your lovely comments. I’m not so thrilled that I’ve lost all the links to you guys, my technorati and google rankings etc. I’m so sorry but if any of you have linked to me for Apples & Thyme , TGRWT, or just generally, you will need to repair the links. Your links can still be found on the same pages in my archives. They just need to be redirected. You’ll also need to change your blogrolls ( http://vanielje.com/blog/) and please leave me comments so I can add your blogs back to my blogroll.
If any of you have any tips for me, or have had similar experiences, traumatic or otherwise, with your blogs, please share. That’s what a kaffee klatsch is - a chance to chat about something over coffee.
May I be the first to welcome you to your new home! I’m really lookign forward to be able to access your blog any time I like (gasp!). What a a concept! Expect floods of comments…
I’m so glad you’ve made the change! I kept losing your previous site.
I will be sure to update my links to you, just as soon as I have a free minute!
Congratulations on the new site!
I love the new place!

I have brought..hmmm…. apricot and white chocolate scones, and orange curd to help celebrate.
Dear Vanielje, congratulations! Hope everythings fine now. My FTP-server suffers from amnesia and forgets posts, they totally disappear in the great virtual void. It means that a move like yours should be undertaken but I can’t face up to it yet.
I’ll do some repairs tomorrow, but with the Kaffee not Kuchen but a nice piece of very black chocolat imported from France. Can you smell it? http://www.patrickroger.com/site/index.htm
when in Paris, go there. Lizet
Well. I’ve now favorited you three times on technoarati, but you’re worth it.
Also fixed the links to Apples & Thyme and on my blogroll. So you’re all official at my place.
I love the look of your new home, btw… you’ve gotten it organized and decorated so fast!
I’m pretty stable with Redacted Recipes– using Typepad and having successfully mapped my domain properly last month (that was a three day lesson in frustration!). So I don’t have any painful moving stories. The pain I am having is realizing I need to add the following to Redacted Recipes: 1) a nice header (I am so not good at this stuff), 2) a recipe index (oh man… the hours I see ahead of me), and 3) I’d love to customize the template so I can have some global navigation links for things like the recipe index and recurring themes (The ARtful Kitchen and Bad Teeth and Lousy Cooking).
Hey! Thanks for the email with the info… congrats on the self-hosting gig! One day, when I know how to code lol! Looks great, beautiful new home!
I need to up date everything for you. I’m only glad that I had put you into a feed yesterday, or I might not have found you for awhile. The first feed had an incorrect link, but the one for this post directed me correctly this time. I am very impressed with you r speed with sort all of this out. I think your new digs are quite nice. You have a lot of nice features like putting your recipes in your cookbook and out of your blog, keeping it all tidy. I still find most of the nuts and bolts of web and blog design very bewildering. I usually just limp along till I have the patience to work on wading thru the layers of information out there and the thunderbolt of understanding strikes or it’s just a constant drip till it sinks in. I admire your ability to get it done. I don’t know if this link to a brioche out my archives will work? Other wise I’ll send something along later on.

Ann, you deserve a gold star, at least! It was not that fast. I sat up until 4 am two nights in a row. I was so disheartened that I couldn’t be bothered to write and didn’t even want to be blogging. So I had no choice but to sort it quickly or spiral into a fatal decline!!! I looked around at a lot of free wordpress themes and eventually realised that I would have to buy one. I wanted a separate page for posting recipes and archiving them. I’m not overjoyed about the archives as they aren’t organized enough, but you can also search for a recipe under the categories so I guess that’s okay. You’ve lost me a bit with mapping your domain and global navigation links, but hey, I have faith…
Love the new site. It looks super professional! Will change the url on my blogroll. Well done!
It’s looking great - I hope you’ll settle in quickly. I don’t have any moving stories, as I’ve stayed with Blogger from the start, even though Wordpress and Typepad are sexier and have loads more features for organising and indexing. I just can’t face the trauma of the move and I’m quite fond of old Blogger despite its shortcomings.
I need to bake another batch of rusks, but I’ll whisk up a virtual one here and now for us to dunk in coffee and leave crumbs all over the keyboard!
I’ve signed up on Bloglines and will go and change my Blogroll now.
Jeanne, you may indeed. Yes, it’ll be nice to have a relaxing over a glass of wine sort of chat, rather than can I jump on the tube without getting killed and before the doors close sort of chat.
Barb, thanks for being so loyal, despite the problems. No more, I hope. Problems, not loyalty. Loyalty is good!
Marye, I knew you’d bring something yummy. I t almost tempts me to have another housewarming (sans the move of course)
Lizet OMG that is some serious chocolate. Don’t worry about cake , that’ll do fine.
Sarah, thank you. Psst. I don’t know how to code (or even what that is). Trial and error, unbelievable video tutorials and great help forums.
Pasticciera, you can come to a Kaffee Klatsch anytime. That is certainly delicious. Enough to make anyone forget that they can’t see straight for ftp’s and domain hosts
Thanks Amanda, and thanks Kit, I’m digging crumbs out of my keyboard as we chat.
OK you’ve now proven that I have NO excuse to not get onto my own domain. You did all this in two days?! I am *so* impressed! Looks fabulous and I’m sure you’ll have it all organized to your liking very soon
I’m changing links now….
Your new site looks wonderful from where I’m sitting
Inge, by global navigation links I mean exactly what you’ve got at the top of your blog (”Home”, “I’m African Vanielje”, and “Vanielje Kitchen Cook Book”). To do it in Typepad I have to modify my template with HTML and that scares me.
You might have been up until 4:00 AM for two nights, but that’s still very fast to get your new home looking so well-designed.
I’m so glad I don’t have any major problems with my blog, as this change sounds nightmarish. I will get around to chaning all your links for the event soon.
In the meantime, I hope you enjoyed the biscotti and thanks for the plugs love!!!
Sognatrice, thank you. It was stressful at the time, but it was depressing not wanting to blog. Now I’m all enthused again. All that remains is a decent camera. I’m looking at the new Samsung GX 10. Hah! Wishful thinking. Then I just need to learn what to do with it.
loving your NaBloPoMo stuff.
Thanks maryann, and thanks to all of you who are leaving comments. I am adding you to my blogroll as I go. Please let me know if I have made any mistakes.
Ann I knew that! I did those worldwide travel thingies on purpose (not!)
Jeni, I’m hoping it’s all going to be a lot easier in future.
Uh…thought I had better leave TWO comments because of the two blogs..and guess what? I am about to launch a third food related one..I think you will like.. say tuned!
Let me be the next to congratulate you on the new site. Nice design. You made the move sound like a piece of biscotti.
Marye, food , you, what’s not to like. Had a great laugh in fact ROTFLMAO (I am reliably informed that this means rolling on the floor laughing my arse of) and I’ve been dying to use it, at 7 babes a - baking. Sorry still finguring out how to add links. Feel free to send me one.
Also Papin, of flavour alchemy sent me a link to Rachel’s divine fig, chocolate and black pepper biscotti so I’ve pinched some for our Kaffee Klatsch. She is from fresh approach cooking and the link is (sorry, very unelegant) http://freshcatering.blogspot.com/2007/11/chocolate-fig-black-pepper-biscotti.html
here is the link for 7 babes a blogging. which is actually NOT the site that I am about to launch (they gave me a coffee and tea blog!!!!) but is just several of us who wanted a place we could blog about life, the meaning of life, and how ro earn your midlife crisis.
I am glad you find it funny.
You dont think this many blogs makes me look fat, do you?
trying htis again…sigh… it is 7babesablogging.com
Marye, you’re too tiny to look fat if you tried. Although with all that yummy food you cook…something’s not right here.
Moving blog home sounds almost as bad as moving normal home, though perhaps with less back strain. I hope you find your way around the online cupboards soon (so to speak) and enjoy your new locale.
Hey Vanielje,
great that you moved to your own domain! I’ve been thinking about it for long now and just not doing it because of losing all my connections!!:) anyways, I’ve updated you on my blogroll, and hope you do the same!

Lovely new home you have here, Inge. Cheers!
Love the new site! Welcome to WordPress. I’ve been doing my own WP hosting for two years now, so if you need any help or tips, just give me a buzz. As for the klatsch, I’m bringing homemade southern biscuits with maple cranberry butter. Or I can bring chocolate dipped hazelnut shortbread, whichever you prefer.
Annemarie, I think it’s right up there with death and divorce for stress.
Mansi, all updated. Thanks, and good luck with your move.
arfi, thanks. \I’m still a bit lost and keep rearranging, but I’ll get there
Andrea. Thanks. I may just take you up on that as there are a few things I’m clueless about.
Can’t you just bring the southern biscuits and the hazelnut shortbread?
I’ll eat them both, promise!
Well done! It’s in my future - sometime. I’ll put it off as long as possible.
Graet job, though!
Well done with your transition. Takes quite a while to set up a new blog. Wordpress is a good choice, (except for their archiving). This is my first visit, but will be back.
Oh, PS, love the coffee pot!
Katie, I couldn’t see a way of fixing my blog and bloger were not very helpful, they just kept telling me it was fine so eventually I had no choice. The annoying thing is if I’d done it as soon as I started having problems I would have had a lot less work to do and retained a lot more links. I did find out that I should have left the old site up instead of deleting it, and permanently redirected to my new site. This way, technorati would have eventually reassigned my links. So for anyone else doing it, make sure you redo it that way so you don’t lose out on your technorati ranking.
Vegeyum - thanks, I had a little nibble on your blog too. I love my coffeepot too. My husband bought it for me about 5 years ago when he realised that I didn’t like the taste of the coffee when I just made 1/2 a pot in the large cafetierre. This is a single large mug, or 2 small ones. I also have a stove top espresso pot, and a filter coffee maker. Do you think I’m obsessed with coffee?
Hello…. browsing your site looking for the mincemeat recipe to post my results from the mince pie making and I stumbled over this post….
Does the coffee taste better if you make it in a little cafetiere? May have to invest in one - I’m the only coffee drinker in the house and I’m making quarter pots at the moment! (well, to be fair, my husband is making me a quarter pot in the morning….).
Hi Giselle. The mincemeat recipe is under vkcb (vanilla kitchen cook book). I’d be interested to hear what you added and subtracted. Mine is different each year as I use different nuts and accents.
Yes, I think a single serving pot definitely makes a difference. I always get it a bit wrong (with tea too) if I’m just estimating thirds or quarters of a bigger pot. This way I know exactly how much coffee to put in. Also, coffee is pretty expensive so I don’t like to waste. The investment is definitely worth it and my pot actually makes two cups or one big mug.
Hm… will tell my hubby that he can get me one for my birthday!
Will post my reply to the mincemeat question under that recipe then….
